I have a few rules when it comes to farmers markets. I need them to keep me focused in a place that is a playground for my interests, and equally a potential burden on my grocery budget.

Rule 1 - "If you ain't got it, don’t it." Farmers markets have so many treats. I love the farmers market, when I can afford it. There are some people who love to window shop…and then there is me . I love beautiful things. I love delicious things. I want it all!

Rule 2 - No visiting the ATM. I have an amount I allow myself to spend and I force myself to stick it...most days. It's an exercise in discipline...believe me I need it. Determine how much you are going to spend and take that much in cash.

Rule 3 - Taste, Taste, Taste. Tasting is absolutely the best part of a Farmers market, but it's not Costco or Sam's club. You aren't sampling to get full. The goal is to have a tasting experience and get your weekly fruits and vegetables.

Rule 4 – Find the flavorbomb! What is a flavorbomb? It is the most delicious, most amazing bite of fruit or vegetable as decided by a jury of my taste buds! It's the item I cannot leave without.

On my latest trip to the farmers market I stuck to my guns and found the flavorbomb! Citrus fruits are in season at the California farmers markets, and you will find a near endless variety of oranges, blood oranges, and tangerines. Many of them are good. However, the standout from this trip was the Ojai Pixie tangerines from Friend's Ranch. They are tangerine superstars…. seedless, juicy with low acidity, they are addictive! Not in LA? Not a problem, they ship. Check out their website www.friendsranches.com and get blown away by this week’s flavorbomb!
